Iberchem is a global multinational fragrance manufacturer with a strong presence in India, creating fragrances for leading brands in personal care, home care air care, and perfumes. The fragrance house has been based in India for more than 15 years now, during which time the company has experienced exponential growth thanks to its unique products and business model.
With a creative centre and main office in Mumbai, a commercial team in Delhi, and a production factory in Ahmedabad, Iberchem has expanded across the country. It has a commercial presence from the south to the north of India and in neighbouring countries.
India has a unique and fascinating cosmetics and toiletries sector. Traditional fragrances such as turmeric and jasmine essential oils, widely produced in the country, are in vogue. Every year, the fragrance industry gathers at the FAFAI Expo, one of the world’s biggest fragrance and flavour conventions. India is also home to Kannauj, which is hailed as the perfume capital of the East.
India is a rich market for fragrance ingredients. It is the main producer of agarwood (oud), one of the world’s most precious woods, as well as sandalwood. However, their use in perfumery is more widely accepted in Middle Eastern countries, where they are two of the main raw materials for bakhoors and fine perfumery.
India boasts a rich variety of raw materials that perfumers incorporate into their creations, including agarwood, citronella, jasmine, and, notably, mint. Remarkably, India produces approximately 80% of the world’s mint supply. You can learn more about this unique ingredient in this article.
Another significant ingredient from India is agarwood, which comes from the Aquilaria tree, an evergreen species predominantly found in Northeast India, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia. There are around twelve different species of Aquilaria. Initially, the wood from the Aquilaria tree appears light brown and lacks a distinct odor. However, upon being infected by a specific mould known as phialophora parasitica, the tree reacts by producing a dark, aromatic resin called aloes or agar, which gives the wood its rich color and characteristic scent.
Oud is recognized as one of the most costly raw materials in perfumery, with prices reaching up to US$30,000 per kilogram. The steep cost is primarily attributed to its limited availability. Leading oud producers, such as Ajmal in India, cultivate their own agarwood plantations to secure a sustainable source of this valuable material. Every year or so, our perfumers are invited to the Ajmal oud plantation and facility to learn more about this prestigious raw material.
