New and Improved Biodegradable Microcapsule Technology Unveiled – Vernova®Caps+

State-of-the-art, biodegradable, controlled-release microcapsules for fabric softeners and liquid detergents

Iberchem has recently introduced an improved version of its biodegradable, controlled-release microcapsules for fabric softeners and liquid detergents. This biodegradable technology, known as VernovaCaps+, builds upon the original VernovaCaps technology, which was first launched in 2022 for use in fabric softeners. This breakthrough marks a significant advancement in the biodegradable microcapsule sector. 

The name “Vernova” is a portmanteau of the Spanish word “Verde,” meaning green, and the Latin word “Nova,” meaning new. This generic designation effectively communicates Iberchem’s commitment to sustainability-driven innovation across all technologies bearing this name. 

Why VernovaCaps+ stands out from the competition

VernovaCaps+, the latest improvement of Iberchem’s biodegradable microcapsule innovation, outperforms the previous version in the VernovaCaps product line, as well as comparable non-biodegradable products on the market, in several key areas. The new VernovaCaps+ microcapsules feature a polymer wall that demonstrates significantly higher ready biodegradability than previous versions, exceeding the OECD 301 testing requirement of 60%, with a 90% biodegradability rate in 28 days compared to 80% in our first VernovaCaps launch. 

Comprehensive laboratory testing of VernovaCaps+ reveals superior perfume performance compared to both VernovaCaps and traditional non-biodegradable melamine-formaldehyde based capsules. Additionally, VernovaCaps+ offers a higher perfume load —35% compared to 29.7% in the original VernovaCaps technology. 

Alongside these improvements in perfume performance and fragrance slurry load, VernovaCaps+ also provides enhanced slurry stability and a more stable slurry formula over time. Currently, these slurries are available for use in fabric softener and liquid detergent applications. Iberchem has filed a patent application for VernovaCaps+ technology, which is pending.
