In the world of essential oils, Neroli is a relative newcomer. By the end of the 17th century, Anne Marie Orsini, the Italian Princess of Nerola, introduced the essence of bitter orange tree as a fashionable fragrance by using it to perfume her gloves and her bath. Since then, the term “neroli” has been used to describe the essence. Associated with purity, neroli is believed to bring peace to the heart.
Honey is certainly more than a simple jar sitting solidly on a grocery shelf. Aristotle called it the nectar of the Gods. In Greek and Roman literature, honey possessed the magic power to confer the genius of poetry and eloquence. Honeycomb pattern and bees are a great source of inspiration to many designers as well as honey and beeswax are trendy in fine fragrances, personal care and home care items.
Musk is a name that originally designates a strong-smelling brownish substance secreted by the male of the musk deer of the genus Moschus. Until the late 19th century, natural musk was extensively used in creation of perfumes before it became too much expensive and controversial. Luckily, there are some plants such as ambrette seeds that share similar olfactory properties with musk, capable to produce musky-smelling best known as white musk.
Red colour, and specifically Cherry Tomato hue is one of the Pantone colours of the year 2018. Red has more personal associations than any other colour. In Chinese culture, it is associated with fire, south, and summer as well as good luck and fortune. Recognized as a stimulant, red is inherently exciting and the colour was omnipresent in Spring-summer 2018 catwalks. Many launches too this year by leading fine fragrances brands.
Amber always brings perplexity when discussed in fragrances. It gets even more confusing when the terms Amber and Ambergris make their ways in. Amber, also known as Fossilized Amber, comes from plant resin and is a fantasy note meanwhile Ambergris is a natural animal source excreted by sperm whales. Labdanum is the third ingredient of natural origin to give the ambery note. It is sourced from the cistus rockrose shrubs.
The night-blooming flower’s heavy aroma of tuberose takes centre stage in a number of fine fragrance new releases, amongst which male fragrances too. Tracing the evolution of the flower and its usage leads one to encounter a variety of lore surrounding its white trumpet like form. In India, tuberose is renowned for its strong aphrodisiac powers. In Ayurvedic tradition, tuberose is also known to stimulate serenity, creativity and psychic powers.
The definition of elements varies. Western world definition comprises four elements while it contains five in Asia, including wood. In the nature, wood element is represented by trees, grass, plants and flowers. Seen as an exotic place to unwind, catwalks have been invaded by flowers, leaves and green hues to celebrate nature that we all miss. Authenticity associated to it is been expressed also in fine fragrances, but not only.
Green, the colour of nature and life renewal, is associated with ideas of growth, harmony and environment and helps alleviate anxiety. Green also brings with it a sense of hope and adventure as well as self-control. Green, and precisely Greenery, is the colour of the year 2017. Spring-summer 2018 catwalks presented many green hues, amongst which Shaded Spruce already announced as one of the Pantone colours of the year 2018.
Earth is the element of abundance and fertility, and is regarded as central to balance energy. It is the symbol of stability. In such a world of uncertainty and threats, brands -in fashion, home décor as well as fine fragrances and home care- are investing in the trend by interpreting this need for stability with materials such as rocks & stones, earth & soil, lava stones, charcoal & volcano, and concrete.

The gender-neutral movement emerging in today's culture is part of a much broader trend of challenging the status quo. Young people no longer relate to the arbitrary division that has always ruled the laws of consumption. It goes beyond commercial strategy to move towards a society that is more egalitarian and less gendered, where men and women can be really and truly equal.
Due to its rarity, Oudh is more expensive than gold. This infected wood is not a traditional ingredient in Western perfume industry. However, Yves Saint Laurent was the first one to bet on such particular ingredient in 2002 for a larger audience. Many products claim oudh today and at all price levels. Natural and synthetic substitutes in lieu of the extra-expensive, ultra-rare ingredient are often used.
